Lessons from my conversation with fourth-generation insurance agent Cheri Martinen

Most entrepreneurs don’t wake up in the morning excited to review their insurance policies.

They’d rather build products.
Serve clients.
Close deals.
Grow their business.

Insurance usually ends up somewhere near the bottom of the to-do list—right next to updating legal documents and cleaning out the email inbox.

But that’s exactly why I invited Cheri Martinen onto the E-Heroes podcast.

As a fourth-generation insurance professional, she isn’t trying to scare people into buying more coverage. She’s trying to educate business owners before a crisis happens. And after listening to our conversation, one thing became clear:

Insurance isn’t about fear. It’s about preparation.

The Biggest Mistake Entrepreneurs Make

Entrepreneurs naturally focus on growth.

We think about:

  • Marketing
  • Sales
  • Hiring
  • Expansion
  • Visibility

Very few spend equal time asking:

“What happens if something goes wrong?”

Cheri pointed out that insurance is unique because it’s one of the few products you purchase hoping you’ll never need it.

Yet statistically…

Eventually, most of us will.

Cheap Isn’t Always Smart

One of the strongest points Cheri made involved buying insurance based solely on price.

Everyone wants to save money.

But saving $50 or $100 on a policy today can cost thousands later if an important coverage option was removed to lower the premium.

That inexpensive policy may look great…

…until the claim happens.

Then you discover what wasn’t covered.

Legacy Requires Protection

One topic that hit close to home was life insurance.

Entrepreneurs often think about building businesses, but many forget they’re also building responsibilities.

If you’re the primary income earner…

What happens if you’re suddenly gone?

It’s not just the loss of a person.

It’s the loss of leadership.
The loss of income.
The loss of stability.

Protecting your family is part of protecting your legacy.

Business Owners Need More Than Auto Insurance

Many new entrepreneurs assume insurance starts and ends with a business license and maybe an auto policy.

Not even close.

As your business grows, so do your risks.

Hiring employees.
Operating vehicles.
Serving customers.
Owning equipment.
Signing contracts.

Every new step introduces another layer of responsibility.

Ignoring those risks doesn’t eliminate them—it simply leaves you exposed.

AI Creates New Risks

One of the more surprising parts of our discussion centered around artificial intelligence.

Many businesses are using AI to answer customer questions, automate processes, or create efficiencies.

But Cheri shared something many entrepreneurs haven’t considered:

If AI makes a mistake…

Your business may still be responsible.

She explained that some insurance carriers now require separate coverage for AI-related liability because traditional general liability policies may no longer include it automatically.

That’s a conversation every business owner using AI should have with their insurance professional.

Insurance Is Still a Human Conversation

We’re living in an age where AI can compare policies in seconds.

That’s convenient.

But convenience isn’t the same as understanding.

A website can generate a quote.

An experienced insurance advisor can explain what you’re actually buying—and, more importantly, what you’re notbuying.

When something as important as your business, your family, or your future is on the line, that human guidance still matters.

Final Thoughts

Insurance will probably never become your favorite business topic.

That’s okay.

The goal isn’t to become an insurance expert.

The goal is to ask better questions before you need the answers.

Because when disaster strikes, it’s too late to discover the coverage you thought you had… wasn’t there.

That’s why conversations like this matter.

Not because they’re exciting.

Because they’re essential.
