Google’s Suggested Edits Feature Sucks!
You might be wondering why I would say that…
…being that I help companies across the globe get better ranking on Google
…it might be perceived as biting the hand that feeds me right?
Well let me tell ya…
…with what a few of my clients went through in the last few days Google can kick rocks.
Their customer service is beyond dismal and to be honest they are the cause of the situation to begin with.
You see…because Google in the infinite wisdom allows people who have no understanding of what your business does suggest edits to your listing. What idiot thought this was a good idea I’ll never know.
Yet, there it is…”Suggest Edits” on every Google My Business profile.
And what’s bad, is once someone goes in and suggests an edit whether good intentioned (which it never is) or not, the company who was just edited has only several days to respond otherwise those suggested edits stick.
Well, I’ve now fixed more profiles than I care to admit. And because of this wonky feature…competitors can suggest edits to your company and if you’re not paying attention cost you thousands of dollars if not more in lost revenue.
Case in point… just this morning I received an email that someone (and Google never tells you who) suggested my lawyer client no longer had a website. Had I not been vigilant and went in and corrected said edit…their website URL would have been removed from their profile.
And yesterday, I spent an hour on the phone with a Google rep because some nefarious company in California put their phone number as the contact for another company in an effort to steal customers. Now, had this person been my client I would have taken action right away. They called me to help because another one of my clients referred them.
Oh and FYI…some dubious scammers test your profile by suggesting something erroneous and if they see it sticks will know you are not monitoring your listing and will then try to claim that listing as their own.
