Somebody with a deep Indian accent just called me from what sounded like “Frozen Salmon Technologies” about a domain I recently purchased for a client.
When I wouldn’t give him “YES” or “NO” answers he got frustrated and hung up.
If you have recently purchased a new domain and a company you’re not familiar with calls you inquiring about it, do not under any circumstances give out information or say “Yes or No”.
These people will use your phone call as a way to take over your domain and hold it hostage forcing you to pay big bucks to get it back.
It seems to be prevalent for those buying domains through GoDaddy (due to their size as an industry leader in the domain selling space), but I have heard of lesser known domain companies being targeted as well.
The scammers ask you a few questions hopping you will say YES or NO and with those answerer they can generate a verbal authorization to the domain issuer (GoDaddy or similar) and quickly transfer your domain into their system.
Now instead of paying GoDaddy $12 a year for your domain you are forced to pay $100 or more to the scammers. And trying to get your domain back can be worse than having a double root canal.
Be vigilant. Don’t let these scammers steal your domain.
If the caller isn’t representing the service you bought the domain from….just hang up.
