Showing empathy then being accused of acting like a jerk when you can’t help the client.
I see this a great deal in the legal community.
Lawyers want to show empathy towards their potential client, but they’ve heard the same stories over and over. They know precisely the outcome. And although they don’t want to seem rude, they tell the person, “sorry you don’t have a claim” or “you really can’t sue for that” or “yeah that’s not how it works.”
The callers are rude, demanding, in pain or feel victimized and bottom line they want action. And they want action now. They want compensated. They want millions. In most cases, they have no idea how the legal mechanism works or what’s involved in a medical malpractice claim. They’ve watched TV and so they think a case can be settled in 45 minutes or less.
Yet, in reality in can take years before a case sees the light of a courtroom.
As entrepreneurs we want to show empathy too, and take the time to listen and care and gather information. But we also have to strike a balance and learn to say NO. Learn to say “you’re not a right fit”.
Are we acting like a jerk? Maybe. Or maybe not.
What we are really doing is eliminating all the time wasting vampires that suck the joy out of what we are good at. We can show empathy to the right clients who appreciate our work, who understand we are there to help them, who value our experience and refer us to their friends. And if needed we act like jerks to eliminate the headaches brought on by awful clients.
