Social media has become the precursor to engineered addiction.

It’s a construct. An ever evolving platform to continuously get people to check their devices for notifications. If Pavlov was alive he’d be so happy. Ring the bell the dogs come. That’s what we’ve become. Social dogs. Studies have shown the average person checks their devices close to 100x a day.

But Rob, didn’t you write several books on social media and don’t you teach this stuff to people all over the globe?

Yeah, I do. That’s true.

I’m also a big believer in sharing. My first print book was called “Share: 27 Ways To Boost Your Social Media Experience, Build Trust and Attract Followers” and it helped so many people. In fact, some labeled it the “easiest social media book they ever read”.

And two years ago I coauthored, “No Experience Necessary: Social Media For the Boomers, Gen X-ers and the Over 50 Entrepreneur”. That book was written to teach people how to create a legacy through the power of social media.

But here’s the thing…

There’s big difference between sharing your life or business on social media and spending your life constantly checking if you missed something.

FOMO (fear of missing out) and your curiosity is exactly how social media keeps you sucked in.

Oh shit a notification came in you’d better check it. Yup, your subconscious is nagging you to look at your device. Sure you just checked it 20 seconds ago. But, with hundreds or thousands of followers they might have posted something so profound that you just can’t resist checking again.

Yup, just like Pavlov’s dogs.

My advice is to turn off notifications…yes, all of them.

Limit your exposure to what you’re being notified about. You don’t have to be part of the experiment. You don’t have to be a social dog. You can jump in post and jump out at anytime. You have the power. Don’t be controlled by your device or by social media.

Limit your time checking social. Instead of checking 100x a day – check 3x a day. Morning, noon and night. Now you’ve opened up your day to so many more real life opportunities and you’re no longer a social dog.
