“Hey Rob, if I was to get you more exposure, would you do this project for free for me?”
That seems to be a recurring theme lately.
Individuals or companies that want to get what you offer for free in exchange for some promise of getting your name out there.
And, it may sound like a great deal.
That promise of getting you more work is the “carrot” that keeps you from seeing clearly.
You are blinded by a “what if” scenario that might not ever happen.
Or their friends want the same deal and now you are working your tail off doing free stuff in hopes to someday get paid.
Learn to say NO!
Yes, I’ve been approached many times over the last decade by people who could without a doubt afford to pay me, but they used their prowess to try to entice me into working for FREE.
When I declined they in turn got angry and dismissed me as a quack.
It seems to be a pattern to these people.
They try to grab onto someone they can control. Their whole plan is to get what they want for free, with no intention of ever paying or referring you to a paying client.
You are then trapped in a no win situation, always giving away more free work in hopes that one day you will finally get paid.
Learn to value your time.
And charge for your time.
You’ll find that the people who wanted you to work for free stop bothering you.
And those that see how truly awesome you are will be more than happy to reward you for a job well done.
So have you ever worked for FREE in hopes of getting some big score out of the deal, how did it work out for you?
