Did you know broken outbound links on your website can hurt your Google search results?

Yes they can.

And, it used to be that to game the system web designers would encourage you when writing your content to link to all kinds of resources. (Example: wikipedia, news websites, government, etc). Unfortunately, when those sites change the page your content is linked to, they don’t notify you.

Now you have a broken link. Then another. And so forth and so on. Until one day you have over 100 broken outbound links on your site.

Here’s the problem… if your site contains too many broken outbound links and they are not fixed within a suitable time frame Google will NOT display those pages with broken links in search results.

Oh and if the broken outbound link you created points back to your own web page or resource, Google will penalize you even more.

You might still be wondering what an outbound link is, right?

Okay in a nutshell...say I mention “Optimize This” on a page or post I put on my website and I hyperlink “Optimize This” to my coauthored book I wrote with Paul Douglas in Dec 2014 appearing on Amazon. And that link that Amazon uses works for many years. Then one day Amazon change their links. Now the link I’m using on my website for “Optimize This” is no longer valid.

This is why it’s important to check your outbound links periodically, update them or unlink them depending on the content.
