You know you want to…just click it!
At least a dozen times a day I receive some trivia or game link to my Facebook feed…and yes, occasionally I stop to ponder if I should click them. As curious as I am, I know that the moment I click on the link I relinquish vital data about myself to some unknown collector.
What’s worse, is I have no idea how they will use the information they collect about me, good or bad?
Sadly, thousands (actually, more like millions) are duped into clicking those trivia and game links every day. To them it’s just harmless fun. Yet, to those who create these games it’s a way to harvest huge amounts of analytics that help them pinpoint their target audience.
Yep, we trade our personal information for 10 seconds of trivia.
What’s your IQ? Want to find out? Well, you’ll be smarter if you don’t click the link.
What does your answers say about your personality? Click to find out! The answer may surprise you, but your gullible nature is what they are counting on.
What words do you use most? Hah, who really cares but you. And, by granting access to a system that scours your every post, then spits out all the frequented words you used is like giving total strangers access to your bank account to count all your money.
What could go wrong?
Well, for starters how about losing access to your Facebook or other social network account. Or having your information along with a list of all your friends be used for nefarious reasons. Or perhaps being the victim of a stalker or having your information used to perpetrate a fraud.
Stop clicking on links just to satisfy your curiosity.
Hey, I’m all for sharing…I even wrote a book about it (maybe you read it)…but, I also know that not every one wants to share. Some want to take…and take…and take some more. And they keep taking, because you keep granting them access.
Share only to those who you want to connect with, your friends and family…no one else!
