Received an email yesterday asking for my help.

The person said she received my name as a referral from a friend. Although she couldn’t recall friends name. (red flag #1)

In her email her firm was looking for a social media manager. But only her name and phone number were listed on the email. (red flag #2)

So I emailed back asking for more information and that I would like to see some of their social media accounts and her website URL.

She responded with links to their Facebook and Twitter pages but no website. (red flag #3)

Well, I looked at the Facebook and Twitter pages and something struck me as odd. Although there was content on an almost daily basis it seemed that the tone of the posts changed every 30 days or so. (red flag #4)

So this time instead of emailing, I decided to call. It went straight to voicemail. So I left a message. Ten minutes later this person called back. Very noisy background as if in a call center. (red flag #5)

The person explained that although I came highly recommended they would need ideas, samples and a 30 day itinerary of posts created so they could test them. (red flag #6)

I say sure I can do that… for a price.

She informed me that’s not how they work. And if I wanted to have lots of success with them and be their social media manager I would need to supply the necessary content to them in the next few days. (red flag #7)

I replied…you evidently have no idea who I am.

But here’s what I would like to share with you…
(1) I don’t do free,
(2) I doubt you will ever hire anyone
(3) you evidently are trying to get free content
(4) you enjoy tricking people
(5) you will continue to do this after I hang up.

{she hung up before I could say anything else}

When you get emails (or tests, or voicemails, etc) look them over very carefully…not everyone out there is honest, ethical or cares about you. Unfortunately they only need to convince a few people and sadly they will find them. My hope is that it won’t be you.
