I recently installed a country blocker on a local service-based website.

In just a little over a week, it blocked nearly 900 attempts from more than 500 unique IP addresses spread across 64 countries.

Now before someone says, “Rob, that’s just part of being online,” let me ask you a question…

If you’re a plumber in Pennsylvania, a massage therapist in Massachusetts, a moving company in Texas, or a carpet cleaner in Ohio…why exactly do you need website visitors from countries you don’t serve?

You don’t.

Most local service businesses have a very simple target market:

People within driving distance of their office.

Yet their websites are open to the entire world.

That means bots, scrapers, hackers, automated scanners, and all kinds of nonsense are constantly poking around looking for vulnerabilities.

Here’s the thing…

Most of these attacks aren’t personal.

Nobody is sitting in a dark room saying, “Let’s go after Joe’s Plumbing.”

They’re using software that automatically scans thousands of websites looking for outdated plugins, weak passwords, contact forms, login pages, and security holes.

Your website just happens to be on the list.

A country blocker adds another layer of protection by preventing traffic from countries where you have absolutely no business reason to receive visitors.

Does it stop everything?

Of course not.

Nothing does.

But if you can eliminate hundreds or thousands of unnecessary requests every month, why wouldn’t you?

Less junk traffic.

Less spam.

Less server load.

Fewer opportunities for bad actors to probe your website.

And let’s be honest…

Most local businesses don’t need visitors from 64 countries.

They need visitors from 64 miles away.

That’s why I recommend country blocking as part of a solid WordPress security strategy.

Not because you’re paranoid.

Because you’re practical.

The goal isn’t to make your website impossible to attack.

The goal is to make it less attractive, less accessible, and less vulnerable than the next guy who left the front door wide open.

In business, whether it’s marketing, customer service, or website security, the little things add up.

A country blocker is one of those little things.
